2011/2012 Ladies Report

2012 looked to be a promising season for the Ladies football club in CIT. With only 3 of last years players gone and an addition on about 8 freshers things were finally looking up for us. Training began early last semester. We got plenty of games in before the league even beating UCC who are this years O’Connor Cup champs.

This year we were able to send a first year team to the all Ireland blitz in Limerick.  A great day out was had by all and unfortunately we were beaten in the shield final. The league then commenced but unfortunately we weren’t so successful with no wins. Training continued over the winter with bright and early sessions. Numbers were up this year at training sessions which was a huge positive. We continued with the practise games which were so badly needed.

Championship day finally arrived. We travelled up that morning. The girls were in great spirits and arrived in the DCU sports grounds in plenty of time. It was a very blustery and cold day. Kicking against the wind was almost impossible. Our girls played the best football of this year and recorded our first championship win; CIT 0-13 DCU 1-07.

Next on the list was Trinity. We were playing on our home grounds on a pleasant Thursday evening. This however turned out to be a tough battle, with plenty of knock and bruises and at the end we were beaten well by a better trinity side. This was the end to our season as we didn’t qualify for the shield or the cup.

I would like to thank most of all Keith Ricken. With his busy work and college schedule he was still highly committed to us. He rarely missed a session and had brought a new atmosphere into the camp. Also to our selectors Charlotte Kearney and Ross Corcoran who also put in a huge effort with the team this year making every training session and match.

Thanks to Caroline for helping out the girls in need during the year and to our biggest supporter Seamus for brining us to Dublin and finally getting that win he was always so keen on!!!

Lets hope we can continue this onto next year and develop into the team everyone knows we can be and finally win that Lynch Cup!
