2010/2011 Hurling Report

The Fitzgibbon Cup team had a fantastic year in 2010. Fielding many of last year’s Fresher 1 team, they recorded big wins over UCC and UCD to reach the Senior Hurling League ½ final losing by the minimum of margins to eventual Champions UL. This team also competed in the Munster GAA run Waterford Crystal. This was seen as a perfect opportunity to develop the team before the Fitzgibbon campaign. A dogged away win in Kerry showed the true character of the whole panel. A loss to Waterford (Eventually Winners) again by a small margin, in the ¼ final was a disappointment for the team however many positives where taken from the game. In the Fitzgibbon Cup the team Recorded wins over NUIG, DIT and St.Pats to reach the ½ final in WIT against UL. Going in as underdogs, CIT performed to the best of their abilities before losing by 2 points. The panel of players should take comfort knowing that the management and College are proud of their achievements this year and also in all 3 competitions that they were beaten in the latter stages by each of the eventual champions. With a significant number still available next season they will have gained valuable experience from this year. Great Credit must go to the players and the management for their commitment and dedication throughout the year and for the professional manner in which they prepared.

The Intermediate Hurling team put in a huge effort this year. Many of the lads will no doubt break into the Fitzgibbon panel next year and the experience of this year will help them all develop as players. The team reached both the Munster and All-Ireland Finals, however losing to UCC and WIT respectively. Again great credit must be given to the management as they trained separately to the senior team and built a great atmosphere within training. Hopefully the deserved silverware will come towards the way of the team next year.

The Fresher 1 Hurling team had a mixed year. After having a 6 game winning streak in the Fresher 1 league they disappointingly lost the final to UCC with performance that did not do the team justice. They put in some hard work over the January break including playing 8 challenge games, which included 7 wins. Unfortunately however, a strong UL side beat the CIT team in the Fresher 1 Championship ¼ final. Fresher 1 hurling is a huge standard and is almost akin to U21 inter county hurling so to have a good year is a credit to the panel of players and management for the tremendous effort they put in. Many of these lads no doubt will go on to be household names in their counties in the years to come and will hopefully break through to the Fitzgibbon team over the next two years.

The fresher 2 team competed in the B league, however unfortunately losing to Mary I’s 1st team in the ¼ final in Limerick. Their championship preparations were hampered by the month off in January as a number of players would have had to travel long distances, yet they managed to fit in two competitive challenge matches in the time off. Again UL were the nemeses and they beat our Fresher 2 team in the 1st round of the B championship. We would hope to get many of these to play Intermediate next year.
